Good analysis.

I've definitely noticed the creep of more and more being added to the Home button in subsequent iOS releases.

I've not seen iOS 5 yet, but I hope that no more functionality is triggered by the button.

I think it now also closes the "Notification Center". (And the diagram also missed one usage, as spotted by @rpetrich: it also closes an iAd.)

I just tried and it indeed closes the notification center. Wow. That just seems wrong.
