I think it's natural for people to go through phases of wanting to feel "normal" and then becoming the rebel/freak/stick-it-to-the-man/whatever. Sometimes you're a weirdo young and then fit in more as an adult. Other times you're a pretty straight-laced kid (I was) and then want to branch out a lot more later (like I have at times).
I think the misery rolls in whenever you're living life completely at the behest of others and you're suppressing your actual personality at any given time. Be happy being chill! Be happy being outrageous! Be happy being sad! (It's possible!) Be yourself.
