What is the shelf life of unused/unburned CD-R/CD-RW disks? (2014) (superuser.com)

I remember when CDROMs first came out, they were going to be secure storage for centuries, much better than those nasty spinning-rust hard drives.

Guess what I use for my backups these days? Yep, multiple redundant spinning-rust hard drives.

I don't think I have used a CD/DVD for storage for years. I suppose I should throw away the 100 or so burnables that have been sitting on my shelf for quite some time, just taking up space.

I have some that are well over a decade old. Just a few weeks ago, I used a few. They worked.

But, I never use optical media for secure storage. It is always opportunistic. Use it, until it fails, make more.
