I think that a part of the reason is China's hyper-competitiveness, because the country has simply too many people. But then I guess that the more or less same thing would happen in India too? That country has also too many people, and from what I've seen their job market is pretty competitive. I'd be curious to see if these two country appear similarly in the academic landscape.
