This is good advice, and I would say it actually generalizes beyond hardware:
It’s good to get in the habit of asking for what you really want. The answer will be no sometimes, but it’ll probably be yes a lot more often than you’d think.
A lot of people, including me in my earlier career, just assume they can’t have what they want, and never find out because they are too nervous to ask. At some point I realized that I had very little to lose by asking for what I wanted, and I would say that my career got a lot better from that point forward.
