Is it because there is no good ready-made options, or vans like that are too expensive?

I think the DIY aspect is the brand differentiation between "vanlife" and living in an RV in the wal-mart parking lot.

There's plenty of ready-made options, they're just not using the "vanlife" brand on their blog posts.
