On the other hand, I was reading yesterday about the Tonal home gym (not picking on it or promoting it, just top of mind), which is a subscription based home gym appliance that you have to pay monthly for, and, pay to have their techs come and install it, and pay them to come re install it you move. So your example is actually getting closer to reality.

None of the things are actually designed any differently. You can go to the Home Depot and buy the same plug as the electrician does. The only difference is that you're hiring someone else to do it instead of doing it yourself -- in a competitive non-vertically integrated market using standard modular parts.

My example is a horrifying dystopia that people will regret not preventing. The fact that it's infecting other industries will only increase the overall amount of regret.
