Then I started asking more questions and found writers like Johan Harri, Michael Pollan, and Robert Whitaker. Following Whitaker's work after reading his Anatomy of an Epidemic, I also suggest watching the "Medicating Normal" movie.

This has been almost my exact same discovery path but I'm a few paces behind you. I would also highly recommend Carl Hart's "Drug Use for Grownups".
