Ask HN: Is there any reason (so far) to not upgrade to macOS Big Sur?

I'm still on Mojave, having delayed upgrading to this point because of the apparent instability and other issues that kept coming up with Catalina. I don't feel like that was a bad choice. With Big Sur, there's a shiny new set of UI revisions that seem pretty compelling, but I wonder, are there any significant reasons to just stick to Mojave?

(I don't plan on upgrading immediately anyway)

The most pragmatic reason to stay on Mojave a little longer might be that it’s been tested on many millions of Macs for two years. So I’d say Mojave is less likely to break than Big Sur, whose hidden issues are probably yet to be discovered. That goes double if you have a less common setup, e.g. an eGPU.

(Note that this is not necessarily true for security vulnerabilities. As in most complex pieces of software, security bugs are guaranteed to abound in both Mojave and Big Sur.)

Other reasons to stick to Mojave for now: support for 32-bit apps, fewer confirmation pop-ups, easier kext handling (I guess?) and better AirDrop support for older devices. Also, iTunes – in case that’s your thing.

I has forgotten about 32-bit apps. I believe thay was one of the reasons I held it back, as well as less confirmation popups. If those are the only major things, I might just wait a few months and see how it plays out in terms of security and stability.

Sounds reasonable. That’s exactly my plan, too.
