I realize this is probably a dumb question, but the bit about combining hydrogen and carbon made me wonder: has anyone tried just, like, compressing high-density polyethylene and seeing what happens, maybe with some sulfur or whatever else involved? If you want hydrogen and carbon in close quarters, I would start there.
