I think this is a situation that's only going to get worse. Tech used to appeal to the curious and geeky because those were the only people who could get value out of using it. Now it's about the lowest common denominator. You make more money selling to a thousand fools than a hundred nerds. So the menu button goes away. The UI customization goes away. The root privilege goes away. 90% of everyday people will trade 50% of their control for 50% more convenience every time.
