On the surface, generating essays etc should be more difficult than simple translation.

On the other hand, a translation tool that "just worked" at human level accuracy would be so incredibly useful.

Is it possible that regurgitating coherent sentences is "easier" than accurate translation?

Translation is getting pretty good at this point (obviously still not perfect and definitely depends on the language). You're not getting the largest possible models in academia when you're using Google Translate.
