I've never heard of suntools before. I googled it and found sunView on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SunView.

Reminds me of Haiku OS (open source BeOS clone), Amiga, and Linux Framebuffer. All sit directly (afaik) on the kernel, fast.
