I had assumed that sufficient money and connections provide immunity from the law only in facade democracies and banana republics.
It appears that that sufficient money and connections provide immunity from the law in America too.

Sorry to break it to you, but USA is regarded as number one facade democracy/banana republic around the world. Many people regarded it as such before Trump, but it really exploded after he got in office.
