It's not limited to mice and keyboards. Pretty much every device or peripheral out there is infected with that, from printers to graphics cards to headphones, etc..

Nearly every hardware manufacturers software is a giant steaming pile.

I suspect that most hardware companies cultures treat software engineering as as second class activity.
