I was burned by a proprietary rich-text note taking application in the late 90s/early 2000s. I've been using a simple text file called "notes" ever since.

"notes" is ~1.4 MB now. Full text search is easy and fast and I always finds what I'm looking for because everything is there. For media I just paste the file path on disk.
