Seatbelt issue is probably going away.

My car will nag the hell out of me if anyone isn't wearing a seatbelt at speeds over 20 km/h. I assume this is true for most modern cars.

Part of the population who didn't grow up with seatbelts is aging. I remember my late grandmother hated the seatbelts, they didn't exist when she grew up. Often she would pretend to use the belt, holding it in place by hand so that it looked like she was wearing it. Stupid, and illogical, but that's how it is..

That only leaves the "cool" youths. Once "modern" naggy cars become old and cheap enough for them, they'll probably start too (or go out of their way to disable the sensor, or uncomfortably wear a seatbelt behind their back - turning a passive action into an active one.).

I don't really understand why anybody would _not_ use a seatbelt in general.

Sadly I have seen a number of people use "alarm silencers" basically just an end cap to fool the automated system that the seatbelt has been engaged. They even have some cute designs with Micky mouse heads for example.

Even people that have grown up with seatbelt alarms. The common explanations I've seen is that it "messes up my suite" or "feels uncomfortable".

For better or worse, seat belt alarm stoppers are cheap and readily available to habitual seat belt avoiders. I know at least one person who has such a thing.

The fact that these seat belt alarm stoppers have integrated bottle openers really seals the deal.

I think I’m going to have to start selling different safety system bypassers, there’s obviously a market here..

Fire detectors covers/alarm silencers/extinguisher disablers.. Life boat/jackets deflators.. fake empty lightweight shell bike/motorcycle helmets.. reflector blackouts.. etc..

Kinda like buying Darwin Award lottery tickets..

The motorcycle helmet one is already a thing, just lookup skullcap helmets and imagine their performance in a crash.

The seatbelt nagging thing is basically mandatory for any car sold in the EU. Has been for quite some time already.

The way some people get around it is by plugging a fake "belt end" thing into it so it thinks you're wearing a seatbelt. Quite stupid because that also enables the airbags which are quite dangerous if you're not wearing the seatbelt.

I've seen people connect the seat belt and then sit on top of it. Probably thinking it's their own business, whilst at the same time making themselves into meat projectiles that could strike other people in case of an accident.

Is that easily bypassed? I don't need my car nagging me because I put a large box in my back seat.

I usually just engage the seatbelt and place the box on top or if the box has fragile/valuable stuff in it I will strap it down with the seatbelt

You can put the passenger belt in the drivers slot, or, as I've seen delivery drivers do, put the belt behind your self and the chair ...

For the cars I had, it was only on the driver seat. I think it's fair to assume there is always a person driving.

I've got one car where the front passenger seat will set off an alarm but if I hit a button on a control stalk it'll ignore it. However, this car loses its mind if I start the vehicle with the driver door open or my seat belt off (pretty common when you want to get the heat or a/c going for a bit before you drive off)

I've got another vehicle where it goes full chicken little if I don't button the seat belt first.

Both of them make me nostalgic for a Mitsubishi I had where the "chime" was a specific speaker that was easily disconnected and not a full blown part of the stereo/canbus/ecu and blasting out of every speaker in the car.

It will nag you even in the back?

Yes, Hyundai Kona Electric 2019[1]

Shit, my Tesla will nag me after I am in park and EXITING the vehicle.

Yeah, I don't have my seat belt on.. because I am getting out of the car!

My car does that too. I have a narrow driveway so I find myself moving my cars around depending on which person in the house needs to go somewhere, and one of the cars will keep screaming even after it’s in park. You need to turn the engine off to make the seatbelt scream go away.

Mine does (2017 Renault).
