In May 2016, an article in Golem.de provoked negative reactions in regards to GARDENA's use of GPL code – GARDENA clearly didn't yet understand the GPL. Three years later, most of the source code of the revised gateway is available on GitHub, MT7688 SoC support in U-Boot has been upstreamed, and management even agreed to allow root access to the gateway for hackers via UART.
