[flagged] Facebook includes Breitbart in curated trusted news (bloomberg.com)

Facebook is a tool for grandparents to see pictures of their grandkids since no one calls them anymore, why does this surprise anyone? Every time I see a nerd in SF walking around in a facebook hoodie I want to take them aside and ask, "do you know what you spend your life working on is garbage? Did you drink the cool-aid or are you just in it for the paycheck?"

Is it the same for the janitor who sweeps the floors? You can't run a modern Facebook without basic sanitation, and on the back of these salaries people intend to raise children. Likewise, would you say the same thing to an accountant working in receivables?

"Do you find deep meaning in your work for random business? Why don't you do something truly meaningful with your life?"

I can tell in less than 5 words what Instagram or Whatsapp are for.

But today's Facebook? I could sarcastically say that they do lots of things but not a single one correctly.

In my early 30s I find the only useful thing about it is local gardening/foraging communities I participate in. Outside of that, there's nothing but fluff.

I read Breitbart daily. Along with CNN, Fox, TheBlaze, the BBC, and RealClear Politics.

It's the best way I've found to get a balanced perspective. They all lean one way or the other, you have to look at them all and triangulate to find the middle ground.

“I read the Italian Fascists daily... you have to look at them all and triangulate to find the middle ground.”

I have some bad news for you, the middle isn’t a great place.

This title is very misleading and link pay-walled. sigh

FB also does Buzzfeed which is a very left leaning/liberal news org. What's your point OP?

It's nonsense, most of the time, but it's not Stormfront. This kind of hyperbole is not helpful.

This is a pretty funny sentiment -- Stormfront in fact links to Breitbart all the time.

If Stormfront linked to HN, then HN is a Stormfront front? This kind of logic is asinine. It's on the level of Nazis wear pants. You wear pants. You're a Nazi??

I didn't claim that BB is a "front" for Stormfront -- just that they're closely associated communities. But if Stormfront linked to HN all the time, yeah I'd probably try to figure out what about HN was so appealing to Nazis and change that.

If you dig into either source, I think you'll find a lot more in common along ideological lines than liking pants.

In days past, true liberalism meant being willing to hear out every point of view, even those you disagree with.

The definition seems to have changed these days. I think it's a mistake. Liberals had higher ground when they allowed every point of view to make their case and thrive or die on their merits.

>It propaganda for fascists, and a machine of hate, targeting the mental inept.

Funny. I would have said the same about nearly every primary left-leaning media outlet.

Please don't take HN threads further into ideological battle. We want thoughtful, substantive comments here, not tit-for-tat flamewars.

That seems extreme. Isn't it irrational to declare that "every" source that "leans" toward whatever political identity you presumably dislike is "propaganda" and "a machine of hate"? That sounds like the most absurd generalization possible - in fact, it sounds like a product of ignorance and hatred.

Fascism is defined as right wing extremism[1]. Hating hate and haters is different than the hate of otherness stoked by fascists[2].

There’s a big difference between the right and left here. If you’re unable to look past your petty lines drawn with colors you’d realize one is a source of shit posting and the other is a source of hate.

It’s ignorance like yours that keeps progress back. But whatever...

Please don't take HN threads further into ideological flamewar, and especially please don't cross into personal attack. We ban accounts that do those things. If you'd review https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html and take the spirit of this site to heart, we'd be grateful.
