I'm awaiting a time where I can do this as well. My issue so far has always been the loss in resolution due to the subsampling required.

You can try a service like this: https://immersedvr.com/ to try out just piping your desktop to an Oculus Go. There is a bit of a latency which will disappear with something like the Hololens.

However, you'll notice that they are taking a 1080p desktop and sampling it on to the Oculus (or Hololens) spherical glass. That loss in resolution is quite noticeable.
