How is it that some articles, like this one, manage to stay on the front page for more than a day, while others (which seem to be popular, based on points and comments) seemingly vanish within hours? Is the human intervention in these rankings stronger than I realize?

Edit: I'm not opposed to this article's longevity, by the way. Far from it, it is a very important topic.
