The only thing that it lacks is having an IDE which has Emacs editor on the right, with synctex running in the bckground. Tbh, I don't see it that helpful compared to the engineering that needs to be stitched together.

Just talking about the file format. Programs could implement partial functionality, leavng everything it does not recognize untouched.
