Sounds like what humans do. We notice features in our world that we're looking for or just learnt about, patterns we've noticed before, things we're attuned to, things that produce emotion - these seem significant - and don't notice others at all. (This is called "cherry-picking" when other people do it.) Over time, we come by a lot of evidence for our private pet theories. Some people write that all down and make books from them.
