What we need is an open source game library manager that just add steam and other as repos so there is zero friction buying games from a devs own repo.

Have you ever looked at Lutris?

If I recall correctly it still requires you to install all the clients for the different game stores and use them for purchases and updates and lutris simply displays all of your games. Not nearly as useful as we need but its significantly harder and probably against some ToSs to do what I am thinking.

That would probably be the easiest way to counteract Valve's near-monopoly. I know I don't want to have a dozen different store fronts with different interfaces, all demanding updates, all wanting to start on boot. I assume others feel similarly.

But if there was a single interface and all I had to do was add my credentials for store X? That's not so bad.
