Great list. The only thing I would add is make sure you have a Windows box. Some tools work on Linux/Mac, but in general, Windows will have easier to use/setup tools.

A fun FPGA project which doesn’t require too much skills/knowledge is to implement a VGA graphics card.

An Ethernet card might also be an interesting first project, albeit a bit harder.




Both the Altera & Xilinx tools seem to work well in a linux (ubuntu) VM on my Mac. (At least at the tier where I can afford FPGA hardware).

For lattice, the open source iceStorm project is a good way to go.
