Cans are lighter, but glass bottles are far better for recycling. They can be simply washed out and reused many many times before you need to melt them down.
if you use the correct bottle for resuse, then yes - notice I said recycling, with is different from reuse - reuse requires a much heavier grade of bottle glass than is currently used.
