This is very important for me as developer and I am using it every day. By joining ONI MS is strengthening parts of its offerings (Linux), and maybe is using (or will be using) existing ONI Linux patents to defend that part.

Why not just use Linux directly? It's much better than using a paid OS with ads and spyware.
