People have given up believing that these laws are created for their benefit... I think this breakdown in trust is partly to blame for the current state of the US (and UK) political systems.

Fixing the issues you list, are part of regaining trust in the political system overall. If it doesn’t get fixed slowly and methodically thing will just get worse and worse until something snaps.
