I'd say it's usually a bad one. By staying out of politics, you're electing to be at the mercy of others, who can (and inevitably will) take advantage of you.
Which is a better use of time: staying in the same place and contending with assholes who want to take advantage of you, or shrugging it off and going somewhere else with fewer assholes?
We are always at the mercy of others, and I prefer not to negotiate with terrorists. Let them squabble over their petty ambitions; I'd rather spend my time among people who are more interested in collaborating with me than exploiting me.
