Even if the maps are distorted, the raw GPS coordinates should still be accurate. Wouldn't the cabbie at least be able to see the rider's coordinates and thus their position relative to his?



Yes, it is the map that is wrong, not the GPS, which is (still mostly) American anyways.

The cabbie can only view coordinate on the map, they don’t have some kind of radar to look at things relatively.
