I made a CCC backup of my Sierra (10.12.6) boot volume before upgrading it to High Sierra. When that didn't go smoothly (Hackintosh reasons, not High Sierra's fault), I was able to boot the backup, and 10.12.6 turned out to mount my now-APFS High Sierra volume just fine. So "any previous" isn't strictly true.
