Updating the Windows Console Colors (microsoft.com)

It's sad to see how many news outlets misreported this as CMD.EXE (The Register) or the "Command Prompt" (several others). It is of course the colour scheme of console windows (managed by CONHOST) that is being updated. And only newly minted ones, at that.

I wonder whether there's some sort of fad about console window colour schemes that is currently sweeping Microsoft.

I remember doing it with DOS and ansi.sys and then enter escape codes with prompt etc.


You wouldn't have done what is being done here with ANSI.SYS. This isn't picking one of 16 colours. This is altering what those 16 colours display as: the 24-bit colours that the 16-colour palette maps to.

It's all about what colour "blue" is, again. (-:
