AOSP is open source which is some components of the Android system - however a lot of Android is not just AOSP. A lot of it is Google web services and other proprietary stuff.

You don't have to use "Google Android" to use Android. LineageOS + F-Droid + microG is a very good setup, I use it on my phone.

The real problem is the hardware driver blobs.

But many of these services are also available on iOS.

Would you still consider them part of Android?
