Is this actually true? It doesn't feel that way to me (American based out of Washington DC area), but maybe I'm naive. Anybody else agree with this statement?
I can't speak for the OP, but what breaks my heart every now and so often is that hate speech against Russians is totally acceptable in the English speaking Internet. It's bad that it happens, that no one seems to bother makes it worse.
I got the sense he was kinda joking, but the US media has been full of reports of Russian hackers for months. One could be forgiven for not taking that as a compliment, and I would fully expect some forum chatter to run with the example our administration and media are setting and paint the situation even more negatively.
It's a more complex issue than one might expect. While in techie areas of US the overt anti-Russian sentiment is rare. However, he said he's doing freelancing in sysadmin area and still lives in Russia.
Most companies that I have interacted with view any vendors outside the G7 with suspicion. Even Poland seemed to raise more security concerns than say France.
In that note, Russia is on a whole different level. It's viewed with the similar level of distrust as China.
Take it for what it is - a personal anecdote. Yet, it's hard to imagine this kind of experience not having an emotional response.
That comment by the author pretty much sums up the World's problems currently. Other people trying to speak for larger aggregates or individuals sucks.
Nobody speaks for my love, not this Russian peep, not you, not HN. Only me.
They are faulting everyone else for their own problems, whatever those are. It's not my problem (or fault) they have problems and I'm sure as shit not going to add to the problems I have by spending extra effort to decode what they mean when they can't say what they really mean.
A lot of Russians are racist, xenophobic and homophobic. (Note how OP complains about "migration crisis" as a reason he doesn't want to move to Europe... yeah.) Moreover, the majority of them support a corrupt dictator who attacks neighboring countries all the time. I understand the hate and I never mention that I'm Russian when I travel abroad.
