Thunderbolt 3 is standardized on using the same USB-C connector.
Much like Apple used the DisplayPort connector before for Thunderbolt 1 and 2.

I know. But a USB 3 Type C port won't support Thunderbolt 3 by default. It has to be a Thunderbolt 3 port.

It's still called USB-C (or more correctly, USB Type-C, but nobody says that). Thunderbolt 3 uses the USB-C connector.
