Reasons besides "didn't want to help":

1) Parents are deceased (mine have been dead for decades, for example, so they couldn't)

2) Estranged from parents (people I know have had little no/contact due to irreconcilable differences)

3) Parents are too poor to help

4) Adult child makes enough money to not need help
