Presumably these are doped diamond semiconductors trapping the electrons as they ping off the C14. Although I'm not sure why they'd need to be diamond, specifically.

As it says in the various articles, anything with less molecular structure than a diamond causes the C14 radiation to 'leak out'.

Why couldn't a silicon carbide be used instead? Or for that matter lead?
