CarPlay is basically an authentication and media streaming station, while Android Auto is basically AndroidOs.

They are very different in terms of architecture and wouldn't be surprised to see manufacturers stick with one or another to reduce cost.

GM offers both wherever it offers one; I cannot speak for other OEMs. (I work for GM)
