The big environmental movement followed Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring (1962).

There was some earlier resource awareness, mostly growing over the 1950's, but it really only chrystalised in the late 1960s / early 1970's.

Earlier concerns were much more diffuse. Aldo Leopold, Thoreau, a few others, but little mass awareness.
