I'm not a big fan of Stephen's cellular automata approaches with respect to fundamental research, as I consider them overly reductionist and largely unable to be validated.

Regardless, a very interesting article. Stephen is a pretty crazy guy (especially in person) but he is undoubtedly smart and thinking deeply about big problems.
