It's a stupid why. Currently they get $8 billion for nothing.
Purchase DDG (and set default) and they lose $8 billion, users complain about worse search results (just like maps) and Google just puts a banner on their homepage saying here's how to change search engine and gets the search traffic for free.
Just because apple makes plenty of money doesn't mean they should buy every random startup.
It doesn't really explain why buying a product that's primarily backed by Bings search index (at least for western customers) is better than making a deal with Microsoft directly for Bing access.
Perhaps in situations when dealing with an entity that’s equally (or more) cold-blooded or cut-throat and doesn’t have any personal skin in the game. Such as in a negotiation with a corporation that’s never going to care nearly as much about me as a person as they do about what they can get out of me; or perhaps a similar entity like a VC firm.
But I agree that it’s shitty to take more than you give to individual people.
Im not sure if this is a new find. Doctors in Japan and Karolinska Institutet in sweden did something similar when they took samples from patients who received cord cell transplants. The findings suggested suggested that brain function can be improved using mesenchymal cells that secrete growth factors and cytokines which activate a mechanism that leads to improved neuro function, neurogenesis and angiogenesis. The issue is that the results should be able to be verified with long-term follow ups to evaluate functional outcomes and possible harmful effects.
