WHO WE ARE
Are you enjoying your job-seeking process? Can you imagine a better way? We at Arena not only imagine a better way, we are working toward making it a reality.
Resumes, pedigree, assessments, and personal connections have proven time and again to be ineffective at predicting actual job performance. These age-old processes reinforce bias. They burden the applicant and the employer with administrative tasks. And they contribute little insight and information to guide either party in determining if they are a good match.
At Arena, you can help replace these outdated processes, one client at a time.
- Help organizations increase retention by putting the right people in the right jobs.
- Remove Bias from the hiring process. Sure, lots of products say it, but ask us how we do it.
- Be a part of a stable, fast growing company where we recognize that creativity, openness, and opportunity are what lead to achieving our mission.
==========
SOFTWARE/CLOJURE DEVELOPER
As a developer, you will handle the full software lifecycle: design, implement, deploy and monitor. Be prepared to dive into all of those areas. You don’t need to know all of our technologies beforehand, but gradually learn them. We seek people that are able to get things done.
You will:
- Develop backend applications in OCaml, Clojure and Python -- we are sunsetting OCaml, but it will be around for a while
- For the occasional frontend, Typescript and React
- Deploy applications using Ansible and monitor them with Datadog, Sentry and Victorops
- Work in an environment that is collaborative - we peer review our changes - and has a mature CI/CD setup - we deploy to production multiple times a day. For this we use standard industry tools like Github, CircleCI, Coveralls.
To apply to this role, email us at hn-hiring-304910 at arena io, and mention you saw this posting. PS: no 3rd parties, please.
==========
We are also hiring for other roles: Head of People Operations, Marketing and Demand Gen Manager, Talent Sourcer, Recruitment Marketing Specialist, Sales Development Representative – Healthcare Practice, Senior Sales Executive – Acute Care Practice. The technology group has three main concerns governing our lives: support our data science, integrate with client systems and build new product lines. For integrations we emphasize correctness and a creative approach in working around the constraints inherent with mature, legacy, third-party systems. Much of this code is written in OCaml with the occasional Python. For everything else we prioritize time to market, fast iteration and the customer feedback cycle. DNA is not a 3D molecule. DNA is a molecule which can be represented as 3D. It can just as easily be represented with one or even two fewer dimensions without losing any information.
By the holographic principle, there may be no such thing as "3D" except as a concept for conscious minds to make sense of reality.
I'd point you to Jordan Peterson's "Maps of Meaning" course.
In a couple of words: as a human, you have an objective (be successful, be sexier, make more money, etc.) and things around you will be either tools or obstacles.
An example of a tool or "container" would be a car. It encapsulates a machinery and abstracts getting you from point A to point B. If it breaks, it leaks the abstraction and now you have to go out of your way to fix it.
"Containers" that work are tools that help you achieve your objectives.
For the second part, why some of us tinker: my theory is that we believe this knowledge will help us attain our objectives in a faster or easier path; it's an investment. For example with more knowledge, we can improve our containers or fix them faster when they break.
Bottom line: It's all about humans trying to attain their objectives and using abstractions for it.
I think there's another side to this: Uber is hedging the supply of drivers in a period of high demand. By asking them to pay, the drivers are effectively committing to drive in that period.
Sounds like an interesting idea given all the outrage with price surges.
