What are the benefits of using podman over docker desktop? I've just got my new M1 macbook and are tempting to try docker desktop alternatives..

I don't know how podman machine compares, but I've found colima [0] to be a much better experience to Docker Desktop on Apple Silicon Macs.

Hosted k8s is a blessing for development teams. A great benefit is that integrating k8s into tools such as Github or Gitlab pipelines makes it a unified and easy deployment cycle. No more issues regarding different release procedures while someone is out of office.

Compliance and web3 arrived.

A lot of companies didn't even need to go the hadoop route. CSVs, jupyter notebooks and SQL databases are very powerful tools for most companies.

Anyone has information about the details of Smart Block 3.0? The "learn more" URL returns a 404.

It should be published now.

It's really sad to see the current state of bitcoin. We can't really justify the current energy consumption while mainly being used as a financial instrument to speculate on.

Nano has been on my eye for a while now. I hope Nano will get the attention it deserves. Sub second feeless money settlement transactions is such a game changer. Nano just works.

Any thoughts on Cardano? They seem to be moving slow, but they also seem to be taking a more rigorous approach.

Cardano is the daddy of shitcoins. It is the Ripple of this bull run. Literally the only thing it is being used for is speculation. Everything else is "coming soon".

Yeah, that's what bitcoin should have been. Too bad it also consumes an insane amount of energy and isn't able to process a lot of transactions per second. Hope that a good cryptocurrency gets more traction and will be the next decentralized "paypal / digital currency".

What about Lightning network? AFAIK it works right now, it's instant and scalable.

You still need one slow and/or expensive Bitcoin transaction to start using it, while having enough funds for a justice transaction. You can't use it trustlessly on your phone and it's also not scalable (no decentralized route finding that scales exists and is an intractable problem).

Just use another crypto if you want to pay for things. 0-conf are just as instant as credit card payments are.

Doesn't relying on the Lightning network compromise Bitcoin's promise of no-trust finance?

Nope, you're still benefiting from the base layer's security while being able to transact much faster and cheaper on layer 2.

Insane. Good to know what made my Spotify app crash upon startup though.

Kinda in the phase of buying disks for a $500-ish~ raid 5 NAS setup. The whole recent SMR debacle keeps me a bit careful on buying those disks before extensively checking out all the specs.

Will news like this cause retail price drops anytime soon? Other advice is welcome too :-)

No. The HDD market is a duopoly.

You’ll find binned versions of these drives in 3 months sold at 40% off in EasyStores and Elements though.

It’s how they get rid of parts that work fine but don’t pass the specs for these enterprise drives.

Bought a 3d printer(Creality Ender 3, sub 200USD). Being able to print nice prints takes a lot of time and you'll learn a lot during the process.

After being able to print I tried drawing. Both blender and fusion 360. Blender for organic objects and fusion 360 for practical engineering objects.

It's a really fantastic hobby and you'll be able to produce a lot of physical objects instead of only writing software.

Good on you!

Please consider joining one of the PPE manufacturing efforts based on 3D printing!

I too bought a 3D printer -- solely to fight this effing virus in some way -- and have been busy doing that for nearly 2 months now.

It feels pretty good!

Based on Chinese data. I very much doubt the accuracy of Chinese data.
