They are moving that thread to a new subreddit, specifically because it inaccurately (imprecisely?) reflects Scott and his audience.

For something inaccurate, why would it be the pinned thread with nearly all the activity?

Edit: Doing a search for the title shows that it's been the main tradition for ~ 2 years. So that line of reasoning seems a little suspect.

It wasn't always like this. There has been a steady rightwards drift these past years and now it has become much further to the right than both Scott and the majority of the blog's audience.

It was a containment thread to keep certain discussions from taking over the rest of the board. It was pinned so it would be more effective at doing that. However, it then stole most of the board's activity and/or attracted its own set of users.

Does it help to think of it as `r/somefansofslatestarcodex` instead of as a subreddit run by the blog's author?

He's one of the top mods, no? At least from glancing at the list.

He is a mod, but not particularly involved in the subreddit.

Given a vector space V, form its top wedge power. This is one-dimensional. And endomorphism of V induces an endomorphism of the top wedge power. But an endomorphism of a 1-dimensional vector space is a number. This number is the determinant.

This is probably the correct generalization of the volume definition.

Strongly disagree. Wittgenstein clears the way for traditional philosophy topics (ethics, aesthetics, etc.) to be taken seriously.

'Engineer types' may react to ethical discussions by pointing out that you can't define right and wrong, and may then wrongly conclude that they don't exist. But Wittgenstein shows that this is an isolated demand for rigor.

You can't define right or wrong? Tell that to an Aristotelian. You can most certainly define it and ground a natural law theory in it.

Many countries do this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_tax_rates

My impression is that income tax is less damaging to investment than than corporate taxes and capital gains taxes, while also being less regressive than a sales tax or VAT.
