Why is most of the substance of this post giant block quote links to his own Twitter? Clicking through to those is painful; it’s not like the author can’t afford to host some screenshots on his own domain.

Look up that case. The victim suffered third-degree burns and required skin grafts. The myth that it’s a ridiculous, over-litigious case is just that: a myth. The coffee was absolutely too hot.

And it was caused by a profit-seeking behavior - an assumption that most, if not all people, would wait to drink the coffee until after they were out of the vehicle, which could be up to X minutes; as such they wouldn't want cold or lukewarm coffee. If most people equated mcdonalds coffee with "bad lukewarm coffee", less people would go to mcdonalds for anything, including coffee. I forget how hot they served the coffee, but it was up around 95C/200F. I know that you have to specifically request "extra hot" at places like SB and CB&TL, otherwise you get coffee hot enough to still be "hot coffee" after adding creamer, i venture 130F or so. AFAIK McDs doesn't offer "extra hot" coffee. Once bitten, and all.

I don't know about the changes made due to this lawsuit, but i reckon they changed their cups to keep ~120F coffee at that temperature longer.

edit: aside: I just realized why i prefer Fahrenheit even though i understand Centigrade. Stuff over 100F is "hotter than i am" It's intuitive in a way that merely remembering 37 is body temp (my dad was born in '37 so that's why i remember) and "anything over 40 is hot" doesn't really roll off the tongue, even though it's roughly as accurate as my ">100F is hot"

I would use Guix over Nix in a second if only Guix had support for ZFS. I don't even need root or /home on ZFS, which I admit can be tricky.

Guix absolutely supports ZFS[1] without root or /home on it.

The user-space daemon for auto-mounts might take some setup, but there's a guide[2]*. I've personally gone all-in and use Guix with ZFS-on-Root, but this isn't an officially supported configuration due to an unfortunate cluster-truck[3] of an issue, and I haven't shared my configuration publicly yet (might soon for other reasons, but it's just not there yet).

*: Accessing ZVOLS through `/dev/zvol/foo/bar` takes additional setup.

I question how important an extension is if there’s not enough incentive to port it to the new paradigm, at least eventually.

Well. The thing with that is just that there are a lot of extensions. Like, a lot!

I've been subscribed to this for years, and it brings me joy every time an astronomical event pops up in my notifications. Big thanks to the author, Canton Becker, who clearly does this out of a passion for remembering to look up.

As someone with just a touch of classical knowledge from high school band and such, I’ve truly enjoyed and learned a lot from the Classical Classroom podcast (https://classicalclassroomshow.com/).

I truly do not understand why this problem has gone on for so long. It's clear that many people think `.home.arpa` is ugly. It boggles my mind that the IETF and ICANN can't come up with some agreement to get `.home` or something similar codified like RFC 7788 tried to do. This just seems like a fight between giant bureaucracies while meanwhile the users suffer and bad decisions like assigning `.dev` are made. I get that there are rules around this sort of critical infrastructure and its management, but come ON. /rant

With the rant ended: can anyone explain to me why all the relevant organizations can't get together and assign a TLD for this purpose that doesn't end in `.arpa`?

Delegating .dev was fine. Sick of hearing about this. As the meme goes, "well, well, well, if it isn't the consequences of my own actions." Everyone who got burned by .dev got what they deserve and needs to grow up already, take responsibility for themselves, and get over it.

Delegating .dev was not fine. Does everything need to be for rent?

The name system is a unique non-renewable resource. And it's not like ICANN gave people a lot of choice for unregistered domains.

By your logic, I suppose .onion was not fine either, till cca 2015 when it got special-use status? And all the name system alternatives should be abolished, because we need to rent their TLDs to some uninterested party?

> I suppose .onion was not fine either, till cca 2015 when it got special-use status?

You are correct.

Just this week in Pittsburgh, I saw an official corporate poster up in a McDonald's advertising a "competitive starting wage" with an 8.5″x11″ sheet taped to it reading "STARTING RATE UP TO 10$/HR." I doubt they'll have much luck at ≤$10/hour. Sure, it's more than the minimum ($7.25/hour), but the "up to" weasel words don't give me confidence.

"McDonald's" is a bit of a mixed bag, like most of the Fast Food Places. McDonald's owned stores are paying a minimum of $13 with the plan to go to $15 in the next few years, this was announced awhile back

The problem is McDonald's Corporate only owns 5% of McDonald's locations, the rest are franchise locations, thus a "McDonald's" crew member at a non-company store is not working for McDonald's but the Franchisee.. This is where you get the lower wages..

This allows McDonald's to get headlines about offering a "$15 min wage" while 95% of wearing an McDonald's uniform do not work for McDonald's thus do not get this wage

I think you'll find that the president who led America through WWII couldn't climb a flight of stairs on his own. Whether or not your assertion about Biden is true, it doesn't seem to matter one way or the other when it comes to leading a nation.

I mean given this person's American history seems to be pieced together from Prager University Youtube clips and OANN I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't know FDR was in a wheelchair.

Their comment sounds like it was generated by a right-wing AI.

It’s a shock mount (probably [1]), meant to reduce noise transmitted from the table or the boom arm or whatever the microphone is attached to.
