I think this is only an issue with the models that end in ‘e’ if I’m not mistaken. They’re pushing it hard, but if you know to look you can find the same model without these absurd restrictions. For example, the HP LaserJet M209dwe (d=duplex, w=wireless, e=HP+) will require an Internet connection and HP’s Smart app, but there is also an HP LaserJet M209dw that does not have these restrictions.
I genuinely wasn’t sure whether psychoacoustician was a cheeky synonym for audiophile or not. :). I looked it up and, sure enough, psychoacoustics is a legitimate field of study.
That’s astonishing. I clearly don’t have any type of intuition for the amount of earth these mines are extracting, because the number you’re putting out there seems comical.
We’ve been using it for years and it’s always been irritating in the way you describe. It seems if you miss the first push notification, you’ll receive a flurry more, many of which don’t really seem to do anything even if you do approve them. It’s possible that I have the timeouts set incorrectly, but I’ve followed Microsoft’s guidelines. Unfortunately we don’t have a better solution, so we suffer with it.
Not exactly the same, but theverge.com has recently decided to shove about 50 Outbrain ads, across 3-4 loads, in between the end of the article and the comment section. It makes me livid every time, yet still I go back :(.
I'm fairly convinced sites do this because someone there is sick of having to moderate their comment section, but doesn't have the buy-in to get rid of it entirely. So instead they stick a bunch of ads above it, hide it behind a button, etc. in hopes of annoying people into not commenting.
I don’t know if you’re joking or not, and I say this as someone who uses Edge as their primary browser, but Edge does not improve the situation you describe. Edge is just a flavor of chromium at this point and absolutely gives Chrome a run for its money in the tracking and telemetry department.
Are you speaking as an employee or a customer? I just checked my password db for a few Citibank accounts and all of them were far longer than 8 characters.
This is me too. And the me of 2 years ago would have been aghast about that. But I now finding myself missing pretty major news cycles regularly because eventually you learn to trust the fact that you can "catch up" at any point in time. I've really enjoyed letting news happen and not getting caught up in the immediacy of it.
I think the threat models of the overwhelming majority of individuals would prioritize scenarios that involve lost or stolen laptops/desktops over law enforcement. So Microsoft defaulting to protecting the security needs of the common man over criminals seems entirely reasonable to me. Criminals (or the security/privacy conscious) can organize their enterprises to make sure that their BitLocker keys aren’t stored where law enforcement agencies can get them. And I say that as someone who really does have concerns about the possibility that this can be abused, but I still believe it’s a reasonable default.
I've never felt a game to be more disrespectful of my time than when playing Animal Crossing. The number of completely unnecessary menus, transitions, loads, and otherwise flow-breaking elements is astounding. That game was simply not for me.
