Funding Circle, San Francisco

We're (seriously) building a better financial world! Our marketplace approach gives small businesses a fast, simple, and fair way to get the capital they need to continue to grow. We've lent over $1B globally, recently completed a $150MM funding round, and are investing heavily in technology.

We primarily develop in Clojure and Ruby (not so much Rails). We can do TN visa and H1B transfer and are focusing on growing our on-site team at the moment.

It would great to talk to people interested in working in Clojure(Script), React, Angular.js, and Mesos for frontend, backend, data science, or infrastructure roles to help us build a collaborative, professional, and diverse team.

You can reach me at rob@fundingcircle.com if you're interested in learning more.

You know that's still pretty shitty right?

Yep. So is eavesdropping on people without telling them and then posting what was said to the Internet. Can't say I'd recommend either, but they both happen with surprising frequency.

The OP overheard this stuff because they were waiting for the conference call issues to get worked out. They couldn't exactly not listen.

All is not lost, though! Maybe OP can go back and apologize for telling people about the racist jokes the Crytek people made at their expense. Wait, no, that's entirely ridiculous.

When people unknowingly do things that upset you, the considerate thing to do is to tell them first, not the whole Internet. Give them a chance to explain, apologize, amend. If they don't to your satisfaction, then by all means go wide.

When people "unknowingly" out themselves as bigots, no, you don't have to be "considerate" and take it to them. That's terrible advice.

Have fun.

The phrase "pick your battles" come to mind here, I mean, scream with rage?

I guess it is because controls are only setup for touch input.

But it's also disabled on a Nexus 7. Testing against a small set of user agents perhaps?

I got an order in for the black 32GB version. No email confirmation yet though..

It could be more readable if you use a placeholder variable

  family, _ = socket.peeraddr
Which is more clear to me, but maybe not as much as just using .first

Take a look at what http://gocardless.com are doing with Direct Debit in the UK. Not sure what "mobile payment" really means, outside of in-app purchases?

I'm employed as a software engineer, but I have a mechanical engineering degree.. What should I call myself?

Could you share some of these reasons? High rent, high salaries I'm sure, but I'd be interested to know what other reasons have.

You've hit the two main ones on the head but the third is more intangible. In London it seems (to outsiders) that people are just trying to emulate SV, this means that you're competing in an international and, most likely, saturated market that doesn't align with what the rest of the UK is traditionally best at.

The UK was built on trade and engineering that mostly started outside London to avoid the Guilds and their stupid rules. I think being outside London gets you closer to these skills and experience and makes you focus more on building a business and less on following international, sexy hype.

I say it a lot but the best place to make money is in unsexy markets, and outside London there are a shed load of unsexy markets desperate for young start ups to dive in.

Don't get me wrong, there are some incredible companies in London doing amazingly well but there is a lot of dross too.
