I believe companies would resort to paying individuals to give word of mouth or endorsements to friends and neighbors and anyone who will listen. Social media would be full of "I've just tried this and..."
A company can't operate without a source of income. Even a non-profit still needs a source to keep the lights on.
In the case of DeepSeek, I believe it is being used as a tool by the CCP to collect data, propaganda and as an economic weapon in hindering western AI projects. So DeepSeek can make this claim if they are being secretly subsidised by the CCP.
I think discoveries by AI would be due to pattern matching. Like finding overlooked cancer markers that can be used for an earlier prognosis. The genius of Einstein and his thought experiments may elude an AI. It may take an AI designed on some other future model other than an LLM to "compress a century"
He called it wishful thinking. I believe the hype over AI is due to attempts to justify the enormous investments going into AI development has created an echo chamber.
For one thing, how do we know that all discoveries are not pattern matching? In "The Act of Creation" for example, Arthur Koestler proposes the idea that all creativity is essentially the act of finding connections between diverse frames of reference and that extraordinary/genius-level creativity might just be that you can spot connections between even weirder and more diverse frames of reference than the regular creative person might be able to.
I am certain there is a self-reinforcing hype cycle around LLMs specifically at the moment, but AI progress is definitely gathering pace and starting to get to the point where it is impacting normal people to the extent that hasn't been seen since the dot com boom. So the people making investments are for sure stampeding to pour in capital so as not to miss out on the big winners from this change.
I noticed that I can no longer that a screenshot on my Samsung phone of Netflix. I used it to advertise a show to my friends. "You gotta watch this..." It’s just them shooting themselves in the foot.
When developers become too dependent on AI to "assist" them in coding, they're more likely to be unable to debug "their own" code as they won't have a full grasp/understanding of it.
People tend to adapt to technology by becoming more lazy, putting less effort in understanding. Look at how after of calculators became common, we got generations of people who struggle to do basic math.
People struggle at basic mathematics because they don't need it for daily use in society. And you forget things when you don't use them.
You'll also find that most people do the same stuff they would have done without a calculator still without a calculator. The advantage now is when they do reach for the calculator they aren't working with perhaps 2 digits precision like the slide rule that preceded them or having to tabulate large amounts of figures to maintain precision.
But there have always been people who struggle to do basic math. It doesn’t seem true that people will be unable to debug “their own” code, even if it was generated by AI, because people already learn how to debug open source software not written by themselves.
> Look at how after of calculators became common, we got generations of people who struggle to do basic math.
Do you have any data behind this claim?

Soon everyone will be texting, emailing etc with an AI secretary doing it all.
"AI take a letter and polish it for me..."
Maybe even video conferences will use "Polish" to portray a recreated lifelike sophisticated avatar with real time grammar correction. When folks finally do meet in real life, they discover a socially awkward, an illiterate or tactless boor instead of the suave intellect portrayed by the AI.
Please forgive my comment, I didn't have any polish for it. LOL

This is how I learn on my own without anyone helping me. I coasted down a gentle slope, ignoring the pedals, legs out to catch myself. Eventually I realized I had learned to balance myself.
