This is giving me Dropbox vibes [0].

I was a bit surprised how much metadata Apple includes for this shared picture (in some of the XHR responses). Not only your email address (the same that's on your HN profile so I assume that doesn't hurt) but also what seems to be your device's name ("i" followed by a part of your last name) as well as what looks to be a unique ID of your device and your timezone (are you GMT-6?).

Wow, you're not kidding! I've never used it before but was frustrated by how broken my other choices were and didn't realize how bad that could be. (First choice: imgur. No longer supporting upload from mobile without their app and mandatory sign in. Second choice: DropBox. Their extension is broken and it saved it as a PDF. Then it saved it as a PNG explicitly but the app was making it too hard to get the direct link to the image without using their share sheet and specifying an email address to send to.)

(I am indeed GMT -6, for at least some chunk of the year anyway.)

I'm not sure if the title of this post changed, but now it only says "might have access" which is not untrue

I wonder why they decided to remove them from GitHub already [1] when they were given a 90 days notice [2].

Often times (in the US) the 90 days notice doesn't mean anything badge/credentials wise. You are walked out that evening (sometimes supervised) and your credentials are revoked asap.

WARN layoffs in NY require 90 days protection.

Maybe to limit the damage notified (and thus possibly upset) employees can cause.

That must've been an interesting calculation. Now they're paying dozens of employees that literally aren't able to work three months worth of salary.

Severance is pretty common, and some companies will just keep you technically employed (and thus paid, and even given health insurance) with no expectation of you doing work or coming into the office. Three months is definitely on the generous side, but not that unusual from what I've seen and heard.

Yep. Severance is pretty common when employees are "laid off" i.e. their employment is terminated not because of employees fault. And generally, you are informed of it, and your credentials and such are revoked almost immediately.

Quite different from when you voluntarily leave, when you give notice and do knowledge transfer and such. I imagine that is because the employee is unlikely to do anything bad, since they likely have a better future.

They're going to place work second anyway (to finding a new job). It's usually to give them a severance, not screw folks on a visa, etc.

Spot on. You never know who might have taken the news in a bad way and decides to lash out.

> I don't see why the node_modules folder should be uploaded.

Exactly! Especially if you're using modules that include some sort of binary and build your function on macOS it's a pain -- I ended up using a Docker-based workflow to get the correct binaries into the node_modules.

Or you can use CI to deploy.

The scammers here [0] used a .tk domain as well. Might be because there's hardly any identification needed for the registration if I see it correctly.

It looks like it still only has 2.4GHz wifi. Is there a reason?

Only needs one antenna to also do Bluetooth. Compatible with all routers except ones owned by techies that wish 2.4GHz would finally die.

My guess is it's because 5ghz WiFi is regulatory hell. I honestly can't think of a good way (off the top of my head) to make this easily usable for international users without making it

a) easy for them to interfere with primary 5ghz users Or

b) making multiple boards with an extra ROM chip ($$) telling people not to export them to other countries.

At least with 2.4ghz you can just stick to lower numbered channels.

Cost is the usual one. Presumably 5GHz requires another antenna, matching network, patent licenses, etc.

Does anyone know how they managed to open the console / inspector inside iMessage.app?

I thought so too but a quick test showed that the code from Capira does indeed work

Where did you test it? In a VM?

If you have a Mac that's on OS X 10.11.3-, then you shouldn't be running unpatched systems.

Ah okay, we have a few other vulns (that have been patched) in various other messaging apps, some required the full pattern others not.

Though,

Ah, I missed that.

They seem very clear about how dangerous the thing is, so unless you're absolutely and utterly certain that it's completely safe, keep away. Don't add more casualties.

I suppose some people just want to be ready for any event.
