Going to shill for Feedbin (https://feedbin.com). I switched to this in 2012 when Reader blew up and it has remained a consistently excellent product since then.
I use the web client, and on iOS I use Reeder app to access Feedbin. Ben even published the a Feedbin API¹, which I wrote a Feedbin client for vintage computers (I called Mosaicbin)². I even use it for YouTube subs as of this year and it ingests them perfectly (and can filter Shorts).
I'm still on the original pricing but would happily pay $5/mo current price if it came to that. It's a product that would leave a huge void in my life if it ever disappeared.
I joined later than you: May 2013. If it really was 2012 when Google Reader blew up, I can't remember what I used before finding Feedbin. Maybe Feedly, maybe something else that came and went or maybe even a local reader...
For Android users, I recommend "Capy Reader" as a client.
Correction, Google announced shutting down Reader in 2013. IIRC Feedbin was created at the same time in response to that. So we were both likely among the first users.
I will add another data point to this: Unbound Merino tshirts※¹.
As other replies have mentioned, merino is definitely fragile (both of mine had holes within a few months). But the caveat being that I literally wear them every 2nd day (I own two day-use tshirts (2 more for night/spare) and rotate them daily, so they probably got 5 years of use in the year that I've owned them.
They are even more amazing for anti-smelling than synthetics with silver woven into them (like Lululemon Silverescent). They can go for weeks without washing (I've tested with other people's noses). Caveat being if you spill something on them or absorb a ton of barbecue smoke, they will need a wash (or at least spot cleaning).
I think merino tshirts (2 pair), lightweight synthetic everything else, powerful phones or ultralight laptops + USB-C has enabled folks like me to travel indefinitely (except in winter) with a 20-25L bag or less ※².
Not knowing how testing works or the criteria in USA/Canada, I'm surprised it's even allowed here. I'd rather be hit as a pedestrian by almost any other truck since at least F-150s and RAMs don't have sharp edges like the Cybertruck...
I don't care so much about the edges. I'm more worried about the height of these newer trucks and SUVs, which create massive front blindspots. The below report focuses on kids, but I'm an adult and some of these trucks seem taller than me.
I drive a smaller hatchback as well and notice the same thing.
I’ve been on the other side of it once. I got roped into driving an acquaintance’s H3 Hummer years ago. I went to change lanes, checked my mirrors, looked over my shoulder out the window, and all seems clear. It wasn’t. There was a car that was completely invisible to me. Had other people not been in the car and looking, I would have run them right off the road. I have no idea how anyone drives those things on a daily basis. I was a nervous wreck.
I think the best visibility I had in a car was my old GTI. I could see all 4 corners and knew exactly where I was at.
> thanks to all of the cameras and sensors everywhere.
Cameras are a band-aid that help a bit, but nothing beats actual clear visibility in all directions, something which newer cars lack.
My partner has a newish VW and it's a menace to drive IMO. For example turning left onto our street, just when I need to see clearly if there is anyone on that street (it's a neighborhood of lots of kids) all I see is a giant A pillar and even more giant rearview mirror, blocking most of the view to the left. I have to contort in all directions back and forth to look around these obstacles which creates its own safety concerns. Visibility to the rear quarters is also terrible.
On my older cars with low doorlines and thin pillars I have perfect visibility into any turn, 100x safer.
Smaller cars don't give them the feeling of power they lack in their life. Yearning for feeling bigger, more powerful, and scarier correlates quite well with some folks driving big trucks, it's a purchase to fill a void.
A 10cm increase in bonnet height, from 80cm to 90cm, raises the risk of death in a crash by 27% for pedestrians and cyclists, according to a Belgian study involving 300,000 casualties. Children were substantially more likely to be killed as pedestrians in collisions than adults, the report said.
But again, here in the US we are an order of magnitude less likely to be hit by a car. EDIT: Than being in a car accident
Obviously we could get into incentives and prioritizing pedestrian safety and urbanizing. But if you take the current status quo of where Americans live and how they drive, I can very much understand regulators choosing to prioritize the safety regulations that will save the largest number of lives on the roads we have now.
It's especially concerning when you see that US drivers tend to drive huge tanks. Whereas in Europe we have a lot of tiny compact cars. And yet they still die in the US in larger numbers :O
There's a really good video by Road Guy Rob that goes into very good detail about the specific causes of pedestrian fatalities in the US: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fEj-pyjA2oo
TL;DW: It's most likely happening at night, on an arterial street, by a truck or SUV.
This might be what I've been looking for. On the first of every month I have Hazel put everything in ~/Downloads/yyyy-mm (previous month), with the intent to move each file to the correct project/area folder in my actual file structure. But I'm about 1.5 years behind on that...
Have you looked at competitors? If so, what are they? I haven't found anything that does this as elegantly as Fallinorg.
Thanks for sharing, jonpurdy — I know how fast that backlog can build up!
Most tools I’ve seen (like Sparkle) sort by file name, but that only works if names are clear. Fallinorg looks inside the file itself, so it understands what the content is about before sorting. I haven’t found another Mac app doing that.
Curious — if Fallinorg could automatically handle your ~/Downloads/yyyy-mm folders each month, would that take care of the backlog for you?
Thanks Jon, Custom categories are available starting with version 3.0 beta. To add one, open Fallinorg Settings → Add New Category. Then enter a name, description with keywords or sample sentences, and make sure the destination folder is set correctly.
Could you please check in the About section which version of the app you’re running?
Reading a thread on r/immigration involving multiple immigration lawyers and corporate lawyers※, the Executive Order wording is apparently unclear and leaves CBP agents with discretion (which can obviously cause confusion and not apply the same rules to everyone).
Much easier for the companies to recommend/insist on folks fly back before the deadline to avoid issues.
The WASP, country club types love the appearance of attacking minorities and other opponents but haven't considered the consequences of their footgunnery.
Trump has a ~85%+ approval amongst republicans. This has been the case for every poll which shows Trump’s approval rating dropping. Its only dropping amongst non republicans.
This is not the part of America that is meant to be great. This is the part of America that needs to be brought in line to whatever storyline Fox and the media sphere on the right is playing.
I mean, why ELSE would the President make such a decree? Obviously because something is wrong. Taking action when it counts.
That is useful to know. We were expecting a 5-month wait (as of January 2025) and recently learned it could take over a year. Since we've been out of country since applying (no biometrics required) we were concerned about being out of country for over a year with just a receipt notice and permit in pending state.
Thank you both for the responses and sharing, crazy helpful.
I admittedly haven’t done my research today on the permit, but reading your reply now and seeing you can apply while abroad…that’s great news. I suppose my partner can start the process while we are still here, but glad we have the option it seems to do this once we are slightly more settled abroad.
To clarify, we applied while in USA (you MUST be there when submitting application and can only leave after biometrics are done (or you get a receipt notice saying you don't need them if they were done recently enough). So definitely don't go anywhere until you apply! (Otherwise you'll need to come back). And I recommend having an immigration attorney fill out the paperwork since the risk of a mistake could cause problems later on.
More info:
The 6-month thing is only used for naturalization; if she's out of USA for longer than that it can reset the 5-year clock. And 1 year thing (without reentry permit) means she'd need to come in on a returning resident visa (which technically can be granted upon arrival). If you don't have one already, any immigration attorney would be able to clarify these details. Much easier for your situation as you're a US citizen!
Yes, since I got my first TV (in 2013) I've had Mac Minis connected via HDMI, and the Minis also being the file server and BitTorrent downloading machine. Prior to that, downloaded to my MacBook or watched on YouTube.
There was never a cord for me to cut (and I refused to pay for cable when in uni since I downloaded everything anyway).
Now just have the Mini in the closet and serving files via SMB to an AppleTV connected to the TV HDMI.
